Voices of Hickling:  Roland Green’s Mill/The Dipping Place

Originally a drainage mill, this became known as Roland Green’s Mill:  he was a well known bird artist who put the distinctive windowed top on the mill to use it as a studio when he was painting his friezes for Whiteslea Lodge.


Later the mill became known as “The Dipping Place” and was where the village children went to learn to swim in the Broad:  at this point of the Broad was one of the few places where there was a gradually sloping  firm bed, safe for learner swimmers…
