David was a year older than his brother - to the day! - whose death in 1957 from leukaemia had a profound impact on David.  

At that time the was at the Grammar School, and his grades collapsed.  No-one at the school mentioned the death to David, no-one asked how he was feeling and there was no such thing as bereavement counselling in those days.
