John Findlay’s mother’s wartime service took her to London, where she worked for Winston Churchill, who called her “Miss Norfolk”.
She was pregnant with John at this time and Churchill said to her one day: “Miss Norfolk, we are going to have to part company because I can’t have you running around with that lump in the front of your uniform…”
