Gwen Amis - the landlady of the Pleasure Boat Inn - used to drive the ambulance back to the Wesleyan Chapel (right) with the mock casualties aboard.
A hospital was set up in the old Wesleyan Chapel (on The Green) for use in emergencies. As well as a ward area with 12 beds, there was an operating theatre in the school room at the back.
Gwen - along with other village girls - was used in the
exercises practicing for real emergencies!
