In the school holidays, Murray played with a large scale model railway at home and spent a lot of time out on the moors at the back of the house (at this point, the Ferguson family lived in Derbyshire) listening to the nature and enjoying the solitude as well as watching the RAF bombers flying along the Derwent valley.

One day he shot at (but missed) a German plane - missing didn’t matter as it was shot soon a few minutes later!
