When he left school, Inky used to work a lot for Mr. Harold Withers at Furze Farm in Sutton.

He also got to know Mrs Withers and would spend a lot of time in her kitchen enjoying her baking and listening to the radio…

When he was called up for National Service, Mr Withers  suggested that he could avoid it as he worked on the land.  He decided, though, to enlist and went into the RAF.
